Post-reading week update

 Here is my favorite work from reading week:





Just a short update here: I was continuing with painting landscape images from life. I continually reminded myself to allow the watercolors to be transparent in this one. I was really struggling with how to present snow. I think the one above does it pretty well and the one below you can see my struggle. 





Then I started playing around with some indoor imagery! I haven't been putting limitations on what scenes I am creating, I just paint anything that seems interesting. So, here is a raised china cabinet:





From here I've started working on some forced perspective paintings, such as 5-point perspective. It's taken me a couple days to really figure it out, and an update will come soon on the progress of that!

 Since I am relatively new to the use of watercolors I think it is important to gather some background information on the material. This is a short, personal refresher on the history of watercolor. Evidently when looking back through history, watercolor paintings weren't highly sought after. In the 1700's, oil paintings were seen as a "more important" material for creating popular paintings. Watercolor Progress #1

 I've decided to pursue watercolor's in specific Lethbridge locations. Using my car as a portable studio, I drive around until something catches my eye. All images are 11" x 15". I began with this first piece on a whiteout day in Riverstone.  At this point I was applying the paint directly, just trying to display was I was seeing. Definitely still figuring out how to apply the watercolor in a way I am satisfied with. I remember being very distracted by what people were doing around me, worried that someone would be annoyed that I was camped out there. I always park in a spot that isn't directly in front of someone's house so I won't inconvenience them.  This next painting was of a school on the west side, continuing with my previous techniques.  Still unsure of how to get harder edges and a nice saturation I tried again, this time zooming in so I wouldn't have to worry about too much detail.  Still feeling dissatisfied I became impatient and the next d...

Sketch Dump#1

This is a portrait I made after the reading on  "The Goddess of Care". Just experimenting with color.  Lately I have been reading up on the Dutch Golden Age, spanning from around 1600-1680. I was playing around with ways we can contemporize or bring forward historical works. Here are two sketches just playing around with this idea.
